May 18,2016
Hon.Geoff Scherer
Mayor,City of Roslyn
Box 451
Roslyn,WA 98941
Dear Mayor Scherer:
The Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC)of the Roslyn Urban Forest (RUF)passed a motion at
our last meeting,May 18,2016,to send this letter enthusiastically supporting the City of
Roslyn's Town to Teanaway project to purchase 160 acres of private property between the RUF
and The Nature Conservancy's lands to the north.
Acquisition of these lands will make it possible to meet and enhance the "Main Goals and
Priorities"of the RUF's Land Stewardship Plan (LSP),the document which directs and controls
management of the RUF.
These goals and objectives are explicitly listed on page 10 of the LSP:
1.Maintain and enhance a healthy forest ecosystem;
2.Provide habitat and habitat connectivity/permeabilityfor a wide range of wildlife
species;
3.Provide a quality non-motorized recreational experience;
4.Manage forest fuels to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires;
5.Provide watershed protection;
6.Preserve and maintain historical and cultural elements and sites;
7.Preserve and maintain the landscape such that it is visually attractive and safe for
people;
8.Provide non-motorized access to and across the RUF and adjoining properties to
create access from the City of Roslyn to Cle Elum Ridge and beyond to the
Teanaway Valley,with the exception of possible snowmobile access as set forth
in Section (E)of the "Overviewof Management Strategies"of this LSP;and
9.Balancing recreation with protection of wildlife and habitat.
Without the 160 acres proposed for acquisition,ecological and recreational connectivity stops at
the edge of the RUF,disconnecting Roslyn's and surrounding trail systems and habitat
(including the Coal Mines Trail,the Suncadia trail system,Washington State Horse Park trails,
and the John Wayne Trail),from the regional trail systems and habitat of The Nature
Conservancy lands and in the Teanaway Community Forest.
Thanks to to the City of Roslyn for taking this proactive step to securing funds for the future of
outdoor recreation,ecological connectivity,and wildfire management in our County.Best of
luck and please let us know how we can assist in the future.
Sincerely,
The Citizen's Advisory Committee of the Roslyn Urban Forest
