Murphy, Director Kittitas County Department of Public <br />Defense <br />RECOMMENDATION: Approve 2026 summer Rule 9 hire in the Kittitas County <br />Department of Public Defense at $28/hour <br />BACKGROUND: The Kittitas County Department of Public Defense was awarded a <br />grant to hire an intern for the summer though the Washington State Office of Public <br />Defense. This internship program is authorized by R.C.W. 43.101.505 to fund Rule 9 <br />interns across the state in rural counties and underserved areas. The definition of "rural" <br />is based on WA Dept. Of Commerce definitions. The grant will provide compensation <br />paid at $28/hour for the period of June —August. <br />We have an intern that we would like to hire effective June 1, 2026 — August 14, 2026. <br />FISCAL IMPACTS: State is paying for intern wages and paying Kittitas County for <br />providing supervision. <br />ATTACHMENTS: Rule 9 job description <br />Legal consultation?
